Former Anna University VC suspended two days before retirement

Times of India : Former Anna University vice-chancellor P Mannar Jawahar, who has been teaching at the Madras Institute of Technology after his tenure ended in 2012, was placed under suspension on Tuesday, two days before he was due to retire from service.
Sources said the action follows an investigation started by the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) into allegations of corruption during his term as VC.
Jawahar, who found the orders waiting for him at home on Tuesday, said he was puzzled by the sudden turn of events. "I am unable to understand why this action has been taken," he told TOI.
"Only last week my colleagues gave me a farewell party. Even the (current) vice-chancellor was there. Nobody mentioned anything to me. I have been going to work regularly, and don't know why this is happening," Jawahar told TOI. "An inquiry into grave charges against P Mannar Jawahar is contemplated. Hence, he is suspended from service," the letter of suspension from the university's registrar-in-charge S Ganesan said.
Sources said DVAC started inquiries based on a complaint filed by the university a few days ago. "We will conduct a detailed inquiry on the complaint, and action will be initiated based on the outcome," a DVAC officer said.
Last year, some faculty members of the university, who had been suspended, claimed that during his tenure as VC, Jawahar had asked them to award higher marks to some students in a revaluation exercise. He has, however, denied any involvement in the scandal.
Jawahar served as vice-chancellor of one of the country's largest technical universities from June 2008 to 2012. He was given a year's extension as VC by the then governor Surjit Singh Barnala after his tenure ended in 2011. Since June 2012, when his term as VC ended, Jawahar has been working as a professor in the department of automobile engineering at MIT in Chromepet. He has been teaching BTech and ME students there.

DeccanChronicle :

Former Anna university vice-chancellor Prof P. Mannar Jawahar, serving as professor in the university’s Centre for University Industry Collaboration (CUIC),  was suspended on Tuesday night. His suspension came at a time when he was to retire from service on Thursday.
A brief order signed by university registrar (in-charge) S. Ganesan read, “An inquiry into grave charges against P. Mannar Jawahar is contemplated. Hence he is suspended from service.”
University sources alleged that he had been suspended as a few cases, including illegal admission of students in Anna University’s College of Engineering, Guindy, and alleged purchase of computer equipments for university departments, are pending against him.
The university sources also said  Prof Jawahar during his tenure as vice-chancellor had appointed his wife Jewelcy Jawahar as international affairs advisor.
A senior university official said the state government’s directorate of vigilance and anti corruption (DVAC) had registered cases against a few of the university officials for their alleged role in the irregularities.
“Based on these we decided to place Prof Mannar Jawahar under suspension until the inquiry is completed,” the official said.
When contacted over the issue, Professor Mannar Jawahar confirmed that he had received the brief suspension order on Tuesday night.

“I am innocent and I had been true to myself and others. I am clueless as to why I was suspended when I have only a day to serve the university. I will prove my innocence when asked to, I have nothing more to say,” he told DC.

FACEBOOK : How to stay private now that anyone can find you on Facebook

Facebook is tweaking your privacy settings again, but it’s not quite as serious as it sounds—the change, which removes an option to hide your name in search results, was announced last December and has already been in effect for 90 percent of users. On Thursday, Facebook removed the option for the last users still hanging on.
This change only affects the less than 10 percent of you still using “Who can look up my timeline by name?” In December, Facebook said it would be retiring the setting “in coming weeks,” but that really meant more than 10 months, apparently. If this change is a shock to your system, listen up: There are other privacy settings you can use to control who has access to your profile.
If you're still using the search option, you'll see this notice in the coming weeks.
Check those privacy settings
Now that Facebook’s Graph Search tool is available to most American users, the way people find you has changed. Instead of looking for you by name, people can find you by searching for “friends of my friends who live in New York” or navigate to your profileanother friend’s page. You can control the audience of your updates, photos, or bio information if you don’t want strangers seeing your information.

Dream of becoming a CEO?

A subtle and silent change is under way in India Inc on the emphasis it seeks in its CEOs: humble and not haughty, sensitive and not insular, about solid teams and not about star individuals. This greater emphasis on soft skills, a manifestation of an economy in crisis and change, is illustrated by how a global bank, with headcount of about 1,000 in India, redefined its search for a country head to executive-search firm Kelly Services a few months ago.

When Kelly presented candidates with plum degrees who had nurtured big brands, the bank's board showed no interest in even meeting them. It, instead, asked Kelly to shortlist candidates who possessed, along with ability and confidence, soft skills to develop talent and win customers.
"The client wanted to know how the candidate has done as a people's person," says Kamal Karanth, managing director of the India unit of Kelly, declining to name the bank for reasons of confidentiality. Adds Jayesh Pandey, managing director, talent and organisation, Accenture: "Increasingly, organisations are looking for CEOs who are humble and have a greater people connect. It is permeating into the way companies are spending their talent dollars."

Karanth says this change has crept in recently. "Three years ago, when a company would give a mandate for a CEO, some of the obvious traits would be peoplebig brands, with sales achievements, flamboyant, high energy, who can crack a million-dollar deal any time," he adds.

"They would compromise if a person displayedthese skills but was bullying and arrogant." Headhunters say company founders and boards are now placing less emphasis on such attributes while drawing up a profile matrix. They instead want leaders who can tackle a slowing economy, a complex business environment and empower a growing number of Gen Y at the work place gracefully and effectively. That philosophy, they add, runs through some of the notable hirings and elevations of 2013: Bharti Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal, HCL Technologies CEO Anant Gupta, Britannia COO Varun Berry, Godrej Consumer managing director Vivek Gambhir and HindustanUnilever MD and CEO Sanjiv Mehta.
In July 2013, when Mehta was anointed, Harish Manwani, chief operating officer of HUL parent Unilever, told ET: "He is not only a great leader, but a very humble man and a man of great compassion. So very competent and yet a great listener, and I have absolutely no doubt he will fit in HUL."

For Navnit Singh, India CMD of search firm Korn/Ferry International, this realignment of preferences is a sign of maturity in the selection process.

"Today, nobody is influenced by an individual aura or a well-known personality," he says. "Companies want leaders who are not rock stars, but who can work with a team of mini rock stars." Increasingly, those "mini rock stars" are becoming younger; they are also ambitious and have an egalitarian approach to workplaces.

"Mostly in new economy companies, those in IT and ITeS that are managing more Gen Y, you need to have CEOs who are more grounded," says Karanth of Kelly Services. "Young people want to be heard and want to know that the CEO is listening," adds professor Linda Hill, Wallace Brett Donham professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, and chair of the school's Leadership Initiative.

The focus is shiftingan individual to a team, quick growth to building an institution. "Increasingly, boards are also liking people who focus on company achievements and not personal achievements," says Anil Sachdev of School of Inspired Leadership, a private business in Gurgaon.

"So, I don't see too many CEOs today interested in appearing on public forums. They would rather spend time with their internal team members." Sachdev is also a member of the HR committee of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). According to Hill, the imperative to spend time with employees is greater in the current shaky business environment, especially if hard steps are to be taken. "...( in such instances ) it's important for them to have the humility to understand that the person in front of them also has responsibilities and obligations," says Hill, who studied the behaviour of several global leaders during the 2008 downturn, including the then HCL Technologies CEO Vineet Nayar.

Hill points out that, in the social milieu, many employees are not only supporting themselves, but also their extended families. "Every effort should be made to help laid off employees maintain their dignity; their treatment will matter not only to them, but also to the survivors in assessing the CEO'sacter," she says. "CEOs need to be sensitive to how people are feeling; they need to lead with transparency, accountability and humility." Rajeev Peshawaria has been the chief learning officer of Coca-Cola and Morgan Stanley, and has held senior positions at American Express and Goldman Sachs.

While researching for his book 'Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders', he found that one reason why Howard Schultz of Starbucks, Jack Ma of Alibaba and Jeff Bezos of Amazonbuilt enduring businesses was that they understood the power of "we". "In the long run, business leaders who have the unique quality of 'humble confidence' are the ones that succeed," he says. "Collaboration is more key today than ever before, and involving Gen Y is an absolute must in order to create a better future." Kishore Biyani, promoter of Future Group, says Indian CEOs are adapting.

"They are more receptive now to new ideas and change," he says. "They were far too stiff earlier and possibly also reflected the attitude of their own leaders." Vivek Gambhir, who tookge as MD of Godrej Consumer in June, says he spends more time visiting the company's various offices and factories; he does not just meet the management, but also reaches out to the officer-level cadre.

Twice or thrice a week, he posts his observations on business and updates on the company's micro-blog Yammer. "From a personality perspective, flashy and high display energy is being replaced by an ability to connect on the ground," says Karanth. Rootedness in a CEO is something that Ramesh Chauhan, chairman of Bisleri International, has been searching for, though elusively.

"Two years back, I sacked a person hired at that level for his inability to get a sense of what is happening on the ground," he says.

"Most MBA-culture CEOs come in with pre-conceived notions and impose their thoughts on others. They just do not listen." And increasingly, neither do companiesthat.

Make your own PC first aid kit on a pen drive

Just like every home has a First Aid Kit for medical emergencies, it pays to have something similar for your PC. All you need is a pen drive that's loaded with essential, troubleshooting software. The tools listed in this piece are free, and run straight out of a USB stick, so you don't even need to install them. And yes, it also means you can carry this 'First Aid Kit' along whenever you want to help friends with their computer problems...

ClamWin
The portable version of ClamWin antivirus can be used to scan your PC for viruses. This is extremely useful because malware can sometimes disable the antivirus software installed on your PC. With ClamWin on your flash drive, you will be able to identify and remove infections.
To keep your PC spic-andspan, you will also need to routinely scan it for spyware and adware. These are pesky programs that get installed along with free software, or if you might have clicked on an unknown web link in an e-mail. To take care of these malicious programs, also keep SpyBot - Search & Destroy on the flash drive. Just make sure you have the updated versions of ClamWin and SpyBot on your USB stick at all times.

CCleaner
If your PC seems sluggish while performing basic tasks like opening a document, or during web browsing sessions, it's probably because of the temporary files created by the software you use. To purge your system of this junk, try CCleaner. Extract the contents of CCleaner's '.zip' file to a folder of the same name on your pen drive. Now, launch the software by double-clicking the '.exe' file and start spring cleaning your machine.

Recuva
Recuva comes with a simple, wizard-driven interface that makes it easy to retrieve files that you might have permanently deleted from your PC. A 'deep scan' lists deleted files in a friendly searchable format, along with the option to preview them if they are images. That said, there is no guarantee that you will always be able to retrieve deleted data. Also, if the files you're trying to recover are extremely critical, it is best to handover this job to professional companies that do this for a fee.

Revo Uninstaller
Uninstalled software sometimes leave residue in the form of files and Registry entries. These are not easy to find and end up hogging precious space. Revo Uninstaller saves you the trouble of manually clearing these files by thoroughly uninstalling a program. It can also be used to remove those stubborn toolbars that refuse to go away. An alternative to Revo Uninstaller is PC Decrapifier - a portable tool that does just as its name suggests.

AutoRuns for Windows
If your PC takes time to boot to the desktop, then it is probably because of the number of programs that are configured to launch during the Windows start-up process. With AutoRuns, you can cut down on these programs. It analyses your machine and shows you the services and programs that are scheduled to run during the boot process. Carefully deselect the ones that are not required at launch and you will improve start-up times. You can also use WinPatrolToGo to the same effect.
How to prep your USB flash drive
*To create your PC First Aid Kit you will need a pen drive with at least 2GB capacity. If possible, invest in one that supports USB 3.0 - this will guarantee faster read-write speeds on newer PCs that support the standard.

*Format your drive: Double-click My Computer and right-click the external drive icon that appears under Devices with Removable Storage.

*Click on Format and select FAT32 from the drop-down list as the file system of choice.

*Check the Quick Format box and click Start to initiate the process.

*Your USB flash drive is now ready to be filled with portable apps. It is recommended that you regularly replace the software on the flash drive with latest revisions. For example, an up-to-date antivirus will be more capable of detecting new threats.

Tips to fix dead USB port

Did you plug a USB drive into your computer yesterday, but today it doesn't show up? Yet that drive works in the other USB ports on your computer. The problem may be the port! This is one of those computer issues that happens so rarely, we tend to blame the USB drive itself; just plug it in somewhere else and carry on.

However, USB devices are still on the rise in popularity and show no signs of slowing down. USB flash drives, USBgers for your phone, USB to connect your iPod, USB coffee warmers, USB is everywhere! So you NEEDyour ports working. Here's what you can do to check out your USB port and some tips on fixing it.

Physical examination
The first thing that you want to do is to see if the USB port is physically damaged. A simple test is to put your USB Flash Drive into the port and see if it wiggles up and down really easily. Be gentle doing this! You don't want to create a hardware problem if you don't already have one. If you're not sure how sturdy the USB port should be, do the same thing in a port that you know works and compare the two. If it is definitely loose, you'll probably want to move right to the end of this articlewe talk about dealing with USB port hardware issues. If not, follow the steps we have here.
Restart computer
Before you get carried away with Device Manager, try the old tech support standby - turn it off and turn it on again. Sometimes that works by forcing the operating system to scan for hardware, the USB port, and makes it work again. If that doesn't work, then it's time to get into Device Manager.

Check Device Manager
You can launch the Device Manager in a few different ways, but here's the quickest one: Click on the Start menu and type devmgmt.msc then hit Enter. Device Manager should start up right away. You'll see the following window:

Device Manager:
Device Manager shows the categories of devices that can be installed in your computer. At this point in time, you want to look at the Universal Serial Bus controllers entries. Click on the arrow head to expand the selection. You will see something the window below:

USB controllers:
This might not make much sense to you, but there is some useful information here. Seeit says Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller? That is the specific type of USB Host Controller for my computer. The key words are USB Host Controller. Find those in your Device Manager. If you cannot find any, this may be our problem.

Click on the Scan for hardware changes button in the toolbar. You can see it highlighted in the image below. This will force your computer to check of your hardware again. If you're lucky, this will pick up the USB port, and you'll see a USB Host Controller in the list. If not, then the problem isn't fixed yet.

Scan for hardware changes:here, things get a little tougher. You'll still be working in Device Manager for now. If you are working with a desktop computer, with your mouse and keyboard plugged into USB ports, you may need to manually force a restart with the following steps. Uninstalling the USB Host Controllers will disable your USB devices.

Under the Universal Serial Bus controllers heading, you will right-click on the first USB Host Controller. That will bring up a small menuthis one:

Uninstall USB host controllers: Click on Uninstall. Repeat that process for any remaining USB Host Controller. Now restart the computer. This will force the computer to poll for these controllers and, hopefully, pick up the one that isn't responding.

While you're in the Device Manager, did it seemthere were an awful lot of devices installed that might no longer be in your computer? Sometimes the drivers stay lingering on your computer, long after the device is gone. This is a good time to clean those out, and we have just the article on easily removing old driversWindows.

Did that work for you? No? Let's go deeper then.

Disable Selective Suspend feature: The USB Selective Suspend Feature is a power saving setting in Windows. What it does is suspend power being sent to a USB device, in order to save battery life of the computer. This is a good feature in theory, but on rare occasions the feature does not wake up the USB Device. If that's the case, then it would appear that your port is dead. You can disable the USB Selective Suspend Feature through a registry key. It's a good idea to do this on any computer that always has power to it, such as a server or desktop computer. You might not want to do this with your laptop, but if you do, you'll be able to turn it on again easily.

To get to the Registry Editor, click on Start and then enter regedit in the Search box and hit your Enter key. The Registry Editor window will open. It looksthis, if you haven't seen it before:

Registry Editor: Navigate to the Disable Selective Suspend key by clicking on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then Current Control Set, then services, then USB.it says Disable Selective Suspend in the right-hand window, right-click and click Modify. In the Value Data field enter the number 1. This will disable the selective suspend feature and power will go to your USB ports constantly.

If the USB key doesn't exist in your registry, it's easy to create it. Just navigate to the services key, and in the toolbar click on Edit > New > Key. Call it USB.

Edit New Key: In the USB key, right-click in the right-hand window. You'll only have the New option. Click on that and DWORD (32-bit) Value. It may just be called DWORD Value on your system. Name the new value Disable Selective Suspend. Just above, right-click and click Modify. In the Value Data field enter the number 1. There! You have disabled the selective suspend feature. You may need to restart your computer for the setting to be applied.

This is a good time to mention that if you ever feel the need to block your USB ports working, there is a tool to help with that. It's called USB Manager and we have a short article on how it works.

Is your dead USB port working now? No? Then you might well consider that the USB port is physically damaged.

Fix damaged hardware: If it's still not working, it may very well be a hardware issue. USB ports are pretty fragile and USB Flash Drives can act as levers on them, wreaking havoc on the electrical connectors inside. This is seen very often in laptops, the user will pack up the laptop and not disconnect the USB Flash Drive. It can usually be fixed.

The takeaway
There are several ways to try to repair your USB port. Hopefully, it's just operating system or driver related as that's the easiest and cheapest fix. Don't dismay if it is a hardware problem - those can be fixed fairly simply and inexpensively too. The point is, it can be fixed.

New app for Sleep well is named as "I want to sleep early"

A new app that urges users to put off the digital products and take sleep reportedly locks the phone for good two hours when the user clicks on the 'sleep' button, in a bid to make people more focused on their health.
The app called 'I want to sleep early' sets off an alarm every five minutes if the user does not click 'sleep' for the time it has been set, and once the 'sleep' command is clicked, the mobile phone is locked for two hours.
Yang Yuan, who has developed the app, said that the intention is to encourage young workers and students to return to the healthy habit of going to bed early as the app also uses pressure social circles to supervise the users, China Daily reports.
Some users said that the app successfully tackled the worldwide problem of using mobile phones in bed', while others criticized it for being too severe.
According to the report, users can choose a option and choose 'giving up sleeping early', which results in an admonitory message being published automatically in WeChat's Moment.
He added that the bad habit of using technology while in bed can be renounced through relying on self-awareness to give up staying late and the app works as a reminder.
The app has been available for Android systems since August.

15-year-old Odisha boy develops ‘emergency‘ app

What do fifteen-year-olds do in their spare time? Play video games and surf the net? Pratik Mohapatra is slightly different. This Class X Odisha boyBangalore has developed an app that people can use to send distress calls in an emergency.

The app, 'Emergency Hub', is available on Windows and Android phones and has been widely accepted by users.

Emergency Hub has the telephone numbers of various emergency services and can connect you to them at a touch whenever you're in distress.

So what made Pratik think of developing such an app?

"After the Delhi gang rape case created an uproar across the country, I thought to myself that if the girl had such an app on her phone, perhaps she could have sent a distress call swiftly and someone might have helped her," Pratik told TOI over the phoneBangalore.

After developing Emergency Hub, Pratik posted it on the Windows Phone Developer Centre and Android Developer Console. They approved it and now, the app has been used by nearly 500 users in the past two months.

"The app has five emergency numbers - police SOS, child abuse helpline, women's helpline, fire services and ambulance. You don't have to remember or search for these emergency numbers when in need.
